Description

| MATERIALS: Cotton cloth, cotton and silk threads, mirrors, rickrack and metallic braid. CONSTRUCTION: Bandhani, chemical dyes. Braid attached on two long ends. Another band is attached using decorative machine stitching such as used in salwaar. Two parts stitched together in centre, embroidered, square chain, cretan, romanian, couched and back stitches. MOTIFS: Phul, gol tak, bori no gul and butti. In bandhani, kungari and borders, field of grid with circles at joints. COLOURS : Multicoloured on maroon. STYLE REMARKS: Embroidery is pako. Conventional motifs. Bandhani pattern is simplified version of Motichur (MSC-49) CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE: Worn by Marwada Meghvals in Banni for ceremonial occassions. The same pattern of bandhani is also worn by Muslim Maldharis in region. CULTURAL REMARKS: While printed versions of odhani are available, the most valued is still bandhani. However the tradition is being replaced by synthetic prints. Bands on edges are used for weitht-to keep odhani on head. Bandhani Gandhi, Head Cloth. |
