Description |
MATERIALS: Cotton synthetic cloth, cotton threads, rickrack and strings. CONSTRUCTION: Machine stitched, hand embroidered, back, square chain, cretan, romanian, couched stitches. MOTIFS: Daanta, kangri, devdi and ambo. COLOURS : Multicoloured on red with blue border. STYLE REMARKS: The back stitch patterns are the same as chain stitch motifs. White back stitching (bakhiya) is always done along the seams of a kapadu. Kachhis use a more elaborate repertoire of patterns than the other subgroups. CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCED: The plain red blouse is a mourning blouse for younger women Elder women wear black. Embroiderey at sides indicates that this is temporary mouning for family members. If a women is widowed she has to wear a mourning blouse all the time. CULTURAL REMARKS: The practice of wearing a red mourning blouse is only among Kachhis. Kapadu, Blouse. |
