Description

| MATERIALS: Cotton cloth, cotton and silk threads, cowries, beads, tassels and mirrors. CONSTRUCTION: Hand stitches, embroidered: square chain, cretan, romanian, herringbone, buttonhole filling, square chain stitches. MOTIFS: Popti, makodiyun, kori ghodi gotto, jharmar, butti, limbudi tak. COLOURS : Multicoloured on red and black. STYLE REMARKS: Oldest existing style work of kachhi, Dhebaria and vagadhia Rabaris were similar. Fine chain stitch of this piece is completely different from large bold stitching of later Vagadhia work. Compare to R-94. Floss hir (silk thread) in bright colours was used for filling areas; outlining yellow and white areas were done in cotton threads. Use of purple is characteristic of vagadhia Rabari work.. Pictorial forms were popular until 1960s. Earlier versions were fine and used chain stitch. Towards 1960s figures became bolder and more abstract. Motifs used in this piece are typical of those used in oshikun. CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE: Used particularly during wedding ceremonies for honoured guests. Used to be part of dowry. CULTURAL REMARKS: Oshikun had gone out of use among Kachhi Rabaris by late 1970s. |
