| MATERIALS: Cotton cloth, cotton threads. CONSTRUCTION: Hand stitched, embroidered, chain, buttonhole filling, herringbone, detached chain, buttonhole. MOTIFS: Deri butti, sudo, popti, makodiyun. COLOURS : Multicoloured on natural and red. STYLE REMARKS: This is the oldest existing style of Rabaris in Kutch. Plain chain stitch is very fine. Motifs are generally outlined. Bokani are made in two parts and stitched in middle; however sometimes Rabari bokanis are made one piece like this one. Traditionally red ends are plain and centre part was embroidered in symmetrical patterns from centre out. Deri motif was traditional. CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE: The bokani is a desert garment, worn over a man's chin, turban, and ears (hence the name, in Sindhi ''bo (two) kan (ears).'' It was traditionally worn by a young groom to protect his tender face and valuable earrings from desert winds. CULTURAL REMARKS: Size is small; probably used for child at time when child marriage was practiced. Bokani, groom's cloth. |
