Description

| MATERIALS: Cotton cloth, cotton and silk threads, mirrors, tassels and synthetic cloth. CONSTRUCTION: Machine stitched., embroidered , chain, interlaced, cretan, double buttonhole, , herringbone, buttonhole, buttonhole filling, detached chain stitches. MOTIFS: Popti, makodiyun, ghodi goto, kali tak ni jharmar, limbudi tak, tak bawaliyun and tak walo phuli sudo. COLOURS : Multicoloured on black, red and white. STYLE REMARKS: The chain stitch and herringbone are older and relate to Dhebaria work. Colours and patterns are traditional to wall hangings. The leaves of toran and tassels are attached by professional tailors probably later than the piece was made. CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE: The toran is used throughout western India as an auspicious welcoming. The simplest version is a string of auspicious leaves, here represented by the mashru ''leaves.'' CULTURAL REMARKS: Rabaris use a toran as part of a seven piece set that decorates the doorway and walls between outer and inner rooms of their house. Toran, Doorway decoration. |
